Readers can enjoy "Uncommon Measure" as an eBook or eAudiobook from May 15-29 with no wait.

Borrow Uncommon Measure: A Journey Through Music, Performance, and the Science of Time by Natalie Hodges from May 15-29 with no waitlist or holds through Libby, available in both eBook and eAudiobook formats.

This genre-defying memoir, part autobiography and part scientific discovery, delves into the intersection of music and time, alternating personal narratives about the author's journey to become a serious classical musician with explorations of the minutiae of quantum physics, notions of entrainment and temporality, and brain wave research.

About the Book

Uncommon Measure explores the intricate relationship between time, consciousness, and music through the lens of a young Korean American violinist. After performance anxiety derails her dream of becoming a concert soloist, Hodges embarks on a journey of self-discovery. To understand how she arrived at that point, she delves into the psychology of musicality; pays tribute to her mother, a Korean immigrant who gave up music to become a lawyer after graduating from Harvard; and looks to quantum physics to reshape her past ambitions into a “more expansive” love for music. Blending personal narrative with illuminating research in neuroscience and quantum physics, she reflects on family, prejudice, and the search for meaning.

A gorgeously written, profoundly felt essay collection about time, memory, and music.
